Her favorite color is red but unfortunatly she is a student at UNC so I used a light blue cotten yarn for the project. I bought 3 skeins for the project but only used 2.5 for both mittens and hat together. The pattern for the mittens comes from a "knit knack" kit.

Directions:
1. Cast on 36 stitches on a size 4 double pointed needle and divide the stitches among 3 needles. About 12 stitches per needle.
2. Join the stitches into a circle and work 22 rounds in knit 2, purl 2 ribbing.
3. At round 23: begin working in stockingnette stitch and switch to size 5 double pointed needles. Do 2 rounds in this knit only stitch.
4. Knit one and place stitch marker after it. Increase by one stitch then place another stitch marker after it. There should be 3 stitches between the markers. Then increase by one stitch again and finish knitting to the end of the round.
5. Knit 2 rounds.
6. Knit one and then increase by one, knit one, and increase one so that there are five stitches between the markers.
7. Knit 2 rounds.
8. Knit one and continue to increase one after the first marker and before the second until you have 13 stitches between the markers. But remember to knit 2 rounds after each increase round.
9. Knit one stitch then remove markers and slide the 13 stitches off the needle onto a stitch holer.
10. Now knit 35 stitches for 25 rounds on the three needles.
11. Begin decreasing by knitting four stitches and then knitting 2 together for the next four rounds.
12. For the last 2 rounds knit three stitches and then knit 2 together.
13. Cut a long tail of yarn and sew it through the remaining stitches. Knot the tail and weave in ends.
14. Slip the 13 stitches from the stitch holder onto 2 size 5 needles.
15. Pick up 3 stitches from the space between with a third size 5 needle.
16. Start at the third needle and knit a round leaving a long tail.
17. Knit 14 rounds.
18. Begin decreasing by knitting one and then knitting 2 together for one round.
19. Knit 2 together throughout the last round.
20. Cut a long tail and sew in the ends of the yarn.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_E5LtHQnvplU/R9xlLK82j-I/AAAAAAAAABM/61Drcfgf4R8/s400/mitten+pic+for+lucy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5178124914161782754" />

And of course you have do this twice to make a pair of mittens.

Orange Cap

This is the hat that I knit my sister for Christmas. She has a fetish for ugly head gear so I thought she would enjoy this bright orange variegation of colors. The pattern comes from Head Huggers and I added some ties I made with a french knitter. I don't think the hat really needs them; but Rachel's hair is so big she thought it might fly off in a strong breeze.
